Journal 7 by Kyle Ciballi

My research topic was on Diamonds in Sierra Leone and the Kono district. Most of you have heard of and or seen the movie blood diamond. That is basically what had started the wars in Africa. It was a big contributing factor to the start of the war. Blood diamonds is a term used for diamonds mined in a war zone and sold for to finance the insurgency. The term is used to highlight the negative consequences of the diamond trade in certain areas, or to label an individual diamond as having come from such an area. so when you hear the word blood diamond its more than just a meaning. Blood diamond means to me that there have been people killed , murdered and disoriented for greed. the diamonds that fuel civil war are actually described as blood diamonds. Most of the diamonds mined are mined in a cruel , in human way. Terrible methods and back breaking pain for their lives to be kept is no way to live.

The bottom photo is what they call "panning". Panning for diamonds is a method they use to extract diamonds from the other rocks, mud, and water.

according to Brilliant earth "In just the past two decades, seven African countries have endured brutal civil conflicts fueled by diamonds: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Angola, the Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo."

  1. I remember watching a movie about this! Its so sad how much killing happens just to get these diamonds. I actually have a friend that will not purchase or wear diamonds, because of blood diamonds. I really liked reading your article!
